Zelensky announced his readiness to defend the independence of the National Bank of Ukraine
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky intends to defend the independence of the National Bank of the country, regardless of who becomes the head of the regulator, the press service of the president's office said on July 2. I will defend the independence of the NBU under any leadership as the basis for the financial and macroeconomic stability of our state, Zelensky said. Recall, on July 1, the head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Yakov Smoliy, wrote a letter of resignation, explaining the decision made by systematic political pressure on the bank, and submitted it to the president. The next day, Zelensky submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a decree on the resignation of the head of the National Bank. In turn, former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko called for preventing the dismissal of Smoliy. Currently, the Ukrainian authorities are continuing consultations regarding the candidacy for the post of head of the regulator.
